September: the gate that swelled
The south gate stuck after three wet nights. Planing the strike edge by a millimetre let it close again. The hinge screws were the real fault: two had pulled out of soft grain, so they went back into hardwood plugs rather than the same holes.
August: oil, then wait
Raw linseed on the outdoor bench darkens the oak and does not make it waterproof. Two thin coats, a day apart, are enough for a surface that people sit on. A third coat stays tacky if the evenings are cold.
